Cute owls seem to be the fever at the moment but I didn't think I would catch it. It caught me. And I credit my beady buddy, Natalie Fletcher for this. She pointed out some real cute felted owls to me. I admit that I had already started collecting owl ideas a long time ago but the switch was still in the off position in my head. However Nat flicked it on. She was the final straw. And so I am naming this first owl output in her honour.
Let me introduce you to ..
I am not sure that this will be the final owl-like output. But whenever I get this kind of fever I need to drop everything and just produce something in this line. Otherwise the little bugger of an idea will just not leave me alone. But as soon as I have done at least one output, the mental frenzy abates (I hope!)
The owls are created via needle felting and then bead embellished. Below are some pics of the trio before they were "necklaced". The black eyes are Swarovski Rose Montees in Jet crystal. The mama has extra flirty, bling-ing eyes ~ courtesy of larger Swarovski Rose Montees in clear Crystal. Mama owl's eye is made from cat eyes, baby owlets from sequins. Seed beads used are Toho rocailles and Maria George's delicas. Metal (gold plated) leaves strung on to add to the natural organic look.
The necklace is crocheted cord from round leather cording (deep dark brown). It is created in one piece, incorporating the loop and button fastener in one worked piece. (no sewing on afterwards). The little sprigs are random woolen yarns.
Approximate length: 21 inch.
Here is a quick pic showing samples of other felted owl cabs I made in the process. At the moment most of them are "raw" - i.e. no embellishment of any kind. Just the shape. I might sell them as is if people are interested in getting the raw owl cabs to embellish according to how they themselves prefer. Or I will just go ahead and embellish them. I have been scrouging and I have some cute eyes that I think will be great for the little "nakid" owlets.
In this sample-pic, there are also 2 felted cabs that are semi-made (bottom left). One has movable glued on eyes. The other has his facial features (eyes, beak) done in needle felting. With felted items, the possibilities are just endless.
The little owlets are not very large. Shown here next to a standard size pen.
Rough conception sketch of necklace. Some visual notes on the necklace cording. Necklace cording done in crochet and worked in one piece from start to finish - begin with loop then carry on to end and incorporate the button before going backwards along the length to finish the cord. I have to look up book again to remember this crochet cording technique. Too hard to explain here.
