The incredible effects and finishes are produced using a vacuum metal coating process. It is applied on the surface of the crystal, either in the front (top) or on the reverse (bottom) sides. These processes can either produce a surface effect, a translucent effect, and/or special surface effects. This vacuum coating process can be applied to clear or colour crystals.
| SURFACE EFFECTS (Vacuum coating on surface) |
TRANSLUCENT EFFECTS (Vacuum coating on reverse side. The resultant effect shines through the crystal.) |

![]() |
V | The effect is applied on the reverse. If a surface effect is normally applied on the front, then this indicates it is applied on the back (e.g. ABV = AB is applied on the back). Similarly, if a surface effect is normally on the back, then this suffix indicates it has been applied on the front (e.g. VMV=VM being applied on the front). |
![]() |
Z | The effect is applied to only part of the crystal (e.g. HELZ means that Heliotrope effect was only applied to part of the crystal stone). |
![]() |
B | Effect has been applied on 3 sides of a cube shape (e.g. ABB) |
![]() |
2x | Effect applied to both sides of stone (e.g. Aurore Boreale 2x aka AB2) |
| Special Surface Effects | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| image | Effect Code | effect name | explanation |
![]() |
MAT | Matt Finish | Matt Finish effect results from a chemical matting process to entire surface of crystal. Small variations may occur. |
![]() |
FRO | Frosted | The Frosted effect can be done via mechanical process but only on Flat Back Roses. |
![]() |
COS | Cosmojet | Cosmojet effect can achieve blackening of single facets of the crystal. |
In its catalogues, Swarovski classifies its effects and finishes as Ordinary Effects or Special Effects. Currently, Special Effects are only available on (clear) crystals.
Some of the Ordinary Effects are applied only to clear crystals, some to both clear and colour crystals.
The effects are available as partially applied (Half Coating) or fully applied (Full Coating).
This listing will give you a detailed general idea of what is available.
For a explanation of code and suffix used for effects, see Effects and Codes.
Prices vary (In ascending amount for the same base article: 1) Crystal, 2) Colours, 3) Crystal with Ordinary Effects, 4) Crystal with Special Effects, 5) Colours with Ordinary Effects, 6) Crystal with Full Ordinary, 7) Colours with Full Ordinary).

Swarovski has combined the divine blue with the white purity to produce this colour of divinity, gods, and the endless skies. It has a most soothing aura, combining the air of the skies with the soul-depths of the deep waters, enlightened with the lights of divinity glimmering through its gentle progress.
The Air Blue Opal is another of Swarovski's magical colours. It is virtually impossible to capture in a static shot, or even with words. Its interplay with light and under different light conditions reveals indescribable colours like opalescent, milky, translucent pinks with points of scintillating light. The closes I can describe it is like looking at high grade opals with their depth of unendingly changing colours and flickering lights of the divine.
Swarovski's Arora Borealis (commonly known as "AB") found worldwide following in the 1950's following collaboration work between Swarovski and Christian Dior.
New colour released 2009/2010.
In the words of Swarovski:
This new crystal coating is thick and luxuriously solid. It even looks a bit like ceramics. A vintage color that calls for a modern twist of color combinations. Versatile and playfully appropriates for today's trends - both timeless and contemporary.

I was asked if this Coral colour would look good with Antique Copper. I think that is an excellent question and I personally have to say it is a great match. I have included a photo so you can decide for yourself. (as always, click for larger image)
New exclusive finish/effect released 2009/2010.
Swarovski has combined strength and gentleness, power and feminity in this new color effect. "Red" is the first-named colour by man and through the ages, it bespeaks of action and power. Yet this new exclusive color finish from Swarovski is not over-powering. Rather its softness comes from the subtle power glow ~ like the hot fires of magma that simmers beneath the earth, the hot passions of the heart is glows from within this crystal effect. It calls to all who yearn for love filled with strength, passion, and tenderness.
Cyclamen Opal is a must have for the current love of opal colors. An appealingly soft and shinny color, it is a fusion of underlying berry and fuchsia. This is a recommended tone-on-tone blends with reds, pinks, and browns (e.g. Rose, Burgundy, Light Colorado Topaz, Smoky Topaz). For a more dramatic combo, greenish yellows are recommended.
Cyclamen is the national flower of Israel. Cyclamen is actually a genus of 23 species of flowering plants. The genus as a whole is most commonly referred to as Cyclamen. The flowers are usually pink or white. They look very delicate and many think of them as indoor plants. But in reality, they can be grown outdoors even in pretty harsh conditions.
Fern Green has been called the true grass-green - a combination of Swarovski's Emerald and Peridot. It is the color of lush green ferns and vallyes.
Color trends released by Swarovski provides great suggestions for colors that will harmonize with Provence Lavender.
Swarovski has called this the "noble" color due to its understated shine and undeniable elegance. It is an intriguing 'barely there' color that makes it so compatible with tonal matchings and color combinations. It brings a refined nobility and elegance to its applications.
Some have said that the new 2009 color Greige and the existing Black Diamond is very similar. In my opinion, to the naked eye, they are indeed. Especially in the smaller sizes. But it all depends on the lighting. There are indeed differences - and it could be the difference that makes all the difference.
Here I have included a comparative shot of both 5328 XILION bicone beads - taken in natural light. You can clearly see that there are indeed differences.
Additionally, I heard from my Swarovski representative (on 16 Oct 09) that the sales of the Greige is expected to bypass that of the Black Diamond and may become jewelers first choice in the "almost there" range in grey tones.
Addendum: (added by request. Click for larger image.)
This additional photo shows 3 colours that some think look similar: Greige, Black Diamond, and Silk. However as I didn't have Silk on hand, I have shown Silk AB instead. It is still enough to show that indeed there are vital differences among the colors.
However you may have noted how the colours can vary (from picture to picture). That is one of the wonder of blings, Swarovski, and crystals - there is no one static colour and tone. It varies according to light and surrounding ambience.
From the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:
Pronunciation: \'gra(zh)\
(hear audio pronunciation of greige)
Function: adjective
Etymology: French grège raw (of silk), from Italian greggio
Meaning: being in an unbleached undyed state as taken from a loom —used of textiles
Inline with the current ongoing demure look, Swarovski has released this deeply rich, precious metallic effect. A rich warm metallic effect that will blend seamlessly with all crystal colours and effects.
Provence Lavender has pale violet hues and glimmering of radiating blues from within. Inspired by the lavender fields in Provence (pronounce: prow-vonce), France.

Taking inspiration from the animal kingdom, key trends for Autumn/Winter 2011/12 divide into different schools of thought. On one hand, paring back is paramount with a focus on nature, tradition and the real and tangible. On the other, encompassed by a positive and uplifting mood, we embrace the future and look forward to new horizons. Our animal instincts have been aroused with a sense of safety, security and community at the fore. Ultimately, we seek to survive. In order to do this we need to reconnect with what is real and tangible to nurture our inner instincts and re-connect with our environment. Armed with this newfound wisdom, we turn to nature and her inhabitants for guidance and instruction.

Tips, techniques, and guides on how to use Swarovski Crystallized™ Elements.
Crystallized™ offers certain products that have special Hotfix glue on the underside of the crystals. These products can be easily applied by using heat - for example, an iron (no steam - water and steam adversely affect the application results).
You can use a simple iron press or a conventional iron. Best results are obtained with an iron that has no steam holes in the sole plate.
Just iron onto your fabric, e.g. T-shirt or jeans, by following the steps below.

Crystal Bermuda Blue and Crystal Tabac are now available on selected Pendants and Beads.
The “P” in the colour name stands for “Protective Layer”, which is a new lacquer system that is applied over the effects Crystal Bermuda Blue or Crystal Tabac. This lacquer is designed to protect the effects from scratches, fingerprints and other damage and also helps to prevent moisture that can lead to corrosion (e.g. from perspiration) penetrating into the effect layer when jewellery is designed to incorporate Crystal Stones that are not set in casings/settings.
Crystal Prints are an innovative new look available for the Pendants and Beads assortment. Three of the standard articles have been decorated with three different standard motifs that create an attractive contrast between the clear, transparent crystal and the black, graphic prints. The innovative designs open up endless possibilities for individual creations that are able to capitalise on both the play of light and brilliance of the SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS and the graphic structural patterns printed on the surface of the crystal.

Platinum Foiling (F) | The highest quality of foiling where the crystal is coated with a protective platinum coloured layer. This foiling is exclusive to Swarovski who introduced it with the super brilliant XILLION chatons. This results in a never before achieved brilliance and optimal adaptation to varying colours of casings. This exclusive Platinum Foiling enhances the XILLION cut (which has the highest brilliance in the world) by protecting the crystal during further processing (e.g. electroplating or soldering), thereby ensuring the permanent brilliance of the crystal cut stone. |

Hotfix means that a specially developed, heat sensitive glue is applied to the back (underside) of Flat Backs(defn). This glue is very flexible. The glue is activated between 120°C - 170°C and when activated, will permanently bond the crystal to the material during the cooling off process.
This variation of the Hotfix technology uses a patented bonding agent. This bonding agent is applied to the reverse (underside) of non-mirror finished Flat Backs. The result is a very interesting "rainbow" effect as the crystal takes on the colours of the carrier materials.
All articles that do not have glue pre-applied to the under/reverse side are considered No Hotfix.

Why do so many people love Swarovski? Why do the top fashion houses around the world utilize Swarovski crystals when they want the very best? Why should you seriously consider Swarovski when there are cheaper products around?
Since 1982 when Daniel Swarovski created the first Swarovski crystal, Swarovski has been and continues to be the undisputed leader in precision-cut crystals of the highest quality. Their crystals are of the AAA quality, possessing about 32% lead content which maximizes light refraction.
Swarovski launched the product brand name Crystallized™ - Swarovski Elements in 2007, under which its loose crystal elements are sold worldwide. Crystallized™ - Swarovski Elements stand for the highest quality in cut crystals and has become a symbol and guarantee of recognition for designers who are licensed to use the product brand in their designs.
All Swarovski Sew-on Stones, Beads, and Pendants have gently rounded holes to ensure the protection of threads used and to avoid damaging finished designs.
Twice a year, Swarovski presents new crystal elements - new colours, new effects, new cuts, sizes, and extensions that are highly researched and inline with the global fashion trends and upcoming developments. Swarovski has a globally enviable trend competence and their in-house experts work closely with leading fashion forecasters (like Promostyl in Paris, and Li Edelkoort of Trend Unions) in producing the latest trends for the seasons.
In 2004, Swarovski released the crystal cut which has the highest level of brilliance in the industry: the copyrighted XILLION cut.
They also developed the Platinum Foiling - which is exclusive to Swarovski. This unprecedented highest of foiling quality supports, enhances, and ensures the permanent brilliance of the cut crystal element.
The XILLION cut is copyrighted protected by Swarovski. Swarovski presented this to the world in 2004. It has the revolutionary crystal cut that produces the highest brilliance. It optimises the light reflection of Roses(defn) and Chatons(defn) producing intense brilliance and luminosity due to bolder light reflection and intensified scintillation. All XILLION elements truly stand out and are clearly visible, thanks to their precision, clearly differentiated star shape cut and perfect positioning of facets which have alternating different sizes (alternating small and large facets). It is this complex faceting that allows it to imitate the look and luminosity of a multi-layered cut.
With the XILLION cut, the stone table(defn) is specially designed to produce perfect light refraction and intense light distribution. The XILLION cut is a brilliance that you can see and measure. In contrast to a Rose(defn) with regular cuts, the points of light in a XILLION rose crystal are noticeably intense. The XILLION rose (round, flat back crystals) is exclusive to Swarovski.
Swarovski XILION cut was originally applied to chaton(defn), rose hotfix (HF), rose no hotfix (NoHF), channels, lochrosen(defn), and all its forward-integrated products (Cupchains & Findings, Crystal Mesh, Bandings, Transfers, etc.) Swarovski continues to develop new implementations and to extend the XILLION family.

In 2009/10, Swarovski has also introduced the XILLION Navette - the Navette Fancy Stone which dominates the spotlight with its intense brilliance and blazing light reflections.
Always the codes with A in them mean the expensive version and a Xilion cut 1028.
As part of their Crystallized™ Range, within Metal Trimmings, Swarovski offers Rose Montées
and Chaton Montées
. But what exactly are the differences and how can you use them?
Montées are stones that are integrated to and pre-mounted into a special metal 'cup' or setting. This allows you to securely sew the stone to the backing material, or to string them together with thread or jewelry wire.
The difference in naming comes from the shape of the stones themselves.
Roses are loose crystal components that are round and have a flat back.
So a Rose Montées is a round, flat-back stone that has been pre mounted into a flat cup setting. The back of the cup setting allows you to sew/string the stone in 2 stringing directions.
Chatons are loose crystal components that are not necessarily round and have a cone-shape back - i.e. not a flat back.
Swarovski's current chaton Montées are however round, but the stones have a pointy, cone back that sits in a higher metal setting. Chaton Montées can also be sewn/strung in 2 stringing directions.
At the end of March 2009, Swarovski International sent an announcement to all its worldwide agents and distributors that the incredibly popular 5301 bicone crystal bead is to be put out to the pasture and will replaced by the new member of its XILLION family: the 5328 XILLION bead.
Swarovski states that the transition period will run from 2nd June through September 2009 and that this will be a global transition. (For Australians, depending on Swarovski HQ local stock availability, the transition may extend beyond September 2009).
It means that we get more brilliance for the same price! The new 5328 XILLION bead, which will replace the 5301, boasts of the revolutionary XILLION cut. The XILLION cut and hence the upcoming 5328, are copyright protected. It promises a distinctively higher brilliance, more fire and greater light reflection with its alternating large and smaller facets.
The increased number of facets promises an overall enhancement while the rounder belt line will result in improved and longer wearing comfort of finished projects.
There are no real good pictures or images of the new 5328 XILLION bead and probably none will be available till sometime after June 2, 2009. The following is the best I can find and at the very least, gives some indication of the differences.

Only the 5301 bicone 2.5mm will remain the same. It is too small to be upgraded. Swarovski promises that the new 5328 will be available, with no price increase, in the same assortment of colours and sizes as the 5301. From 2nd June 2009, new orders for the 5328 can be taken. However, it will only be shipped if its counterpart 5301 is out of stock. After September 2009, all 5328 variants can be ordered and will be shipped.
There is no formal announcement yet as to which colours and sizes will be the first to undergo the transition. However common sense tells us that it would be nigh impossible and hence extremely unlikely that all the 5301s in all it multitude of sizes, colours, and effects combinations will be upgraded at the same time. Swarovski will likely do a soft rollout, replacing them in waves. Or Swarovski will transition one color at a time as their supply runs low. However if you have a look at our current detailed chart on 5301 availability, you will note that some of them have already been ear-marked as "
future out of program". I would hazard a guess that this might be a good indication of what is going to undergo transition first.
Absolutely. Swarovski states: "For application, the 5301 and 5328 XILLION Bead can be combined as their dimensions and geometry are complimentary".
There is nothing to prevent that from being so. From season to season, Swarovski discontinues certain colours, shapes, and effects. Some of these have indeed gone on to become valuable collectors' items due to their increasing rarity. With the 5301s, that might not be so immediately as they were so immensely popular and hence many people still have so many of them. The exception might be rare colours and effects like the Alexandrites, with and without effects, as well as the Cantaloupes.
However it may be prudent, especially if you are in the middle of a project, to get your stock of 5301s now before the transition and the 5301s are gone for good.
We will most definitely be getting the 5328s as soon as they become available to Swarovski Australia. We will keep you updated.

I have just seen the latest and upgraded version of Swarovski's Bead Color Chart for 2009. And I am impressed.
Previously, Swarovski had bicone beads in various colours and effects on the chart. Very beautiful and great quality.
But now, the latest release features the Shapes of Beads as well ... so there are samples so of all those marvelous beads that they offer. There is one pic below (click to view larger image) and you can find more at this listing for Swarovski 2009 Bead Color Chart to see all the details and photos (as long as the item is still available).
Oooh, woopee. I have just been checking out some of Swarovski's very latest exciting releases. There are too many for me to document in a quick hurry but I do want to mention the very notables and the ones that are most likely to be on everybody's palette soon.
There is the Greige which is a 'barely there' colour that will work perfectly with just about everything and bring a touch of what Swarovski calls "nobility" as well as sure but understated elegance to every single piece of work. My Swarovski rep told me that this is her very favourite colour in this release.
Then of course there is the Cyclamen Opal. Even the name alone is tempting. And this is the one that people are already asking for from just hearing about it - sight unseen. This one really looks like a beauty and in a very short time, both these colours will be arriving and available from ClearlyChosen online store.
And the latest crystal effect from Swarovski is called Crystal Metallic Light Gold. Swarovski is offering quite a number of their products with this effect, many with a full coating (2x). I can't wait to see this IRL as this could be just the extra touch for a full load of deep indulgence and chic opulence.
There are a number of new bead releases as well as XILION extensions to current lines. But the one that is sure to catch everyone's fancy is the joyful, playful Fish Bead. It looks sharp and crisp and has been so cleverly cut that it will add both aliveness and remarkable light-reflecting brilliance. Purrrrr-fect for charms ... as long as your kitty doesn't get to it first!
This too should be available very shortly from ClearlyChosen. In fact it is already up and listed so hop over and have a look at the Swarovski 5727 Fish Bead.
Will write more as soon as I find more goody facts and figures and know what else is arriving soon at our companion stores.
